I found myself reading Christian's poems with no expectations of what I would find. He did not disappoint. Right away I was drawn into the depth of Part One and resonated with Mornings the best in that section. I felt challenged and powerful wanting to embrace each day with the joy of sound and light. I know life is not like that and the poems throughout the section reminds me, but for a moment while reading Mornings I was reminded not to forget the joy of my dreams when touched by first light. The Deity Complex of Portion Two resonated with my fluid ability to compartmentalize my life. Materialism was a great wake up for me to live in the moment than chasing the total ECONOMIC SUICIDE. Christian didn't disappoint because in Portion Three I found myself reading his works thinking, "Who do I want to be when I grow up?" This authors collection of poetic words are glimpses into the mind of a man not done evolving and enjoying life, the good and the bad. His definition of the space he has created for himself in this world reminds me to continue exploring this thing we call life. His eclectic thought carefully, yet randomly arranged shout to the reader, "I am exactly where I am supposed to be." Bravo for a series of works well done. Your epilogue says it all, "But that's putting one's life under a lens and seeing what went on from a distance."Product details

#MuchBetter #ThanksForAsking poems for performance Christian Lane 9781511474344 Books Reviews
Christian Lane's #MuchBetter#ThanksForAsking, a series of spoken word poems, comes alive from the opening page. To read them is a very different experience than to hear them performed. In performance, of course, nuances of tone and inflection are subject to the author's emphasis and interpretation, but here before your eyes it's the unstressed syllables, the interstices, that emerge and shift into the foreground telling a story of their own. Beneath the carefully synchronized beats and thrumming repetitions, is a quiet longing, a heartfelt plea for connection. Like poems and songs of the deepest resonance, Lane's poems sing on, lonely and hopeful, like your own.
The stories told in #MuchBetter #ThanksforAsking have layers of humor, darkness, grief, and relief. Intelligence and creativity mesh beautifully with modern verse which forces the reader to interact with characters living in strange, uncomfortable, sometimes seedy, but honest worlds. The range of styles impresses, but the author's tone holds firm this author knows himself well as a writer, and stays true to the end. Reading Lane's poetry and prose will push you to think, both to delve into its deeper themes of the effects of racism and coming to terms with adoption, and to chase down the simpler truth that we're all human, we're all broken, and we all deserve to be heard. The fact that Lane incorporates science fiction into his poetry only seals the deal that this author is hip, has chops, and will leave you inspired. Take the time to peruse the pages; it will be time well spent.
Christian Lane is a fine writer, a talented poet and an entertaining performance artist akin to the morning-after remnants of yesteryear’s Beat Poetry folks. His latest book, “#Much Better #Thanks for Asking,” was published earlier this year and draws on a previous unofficial, handmade chapbook he wrote in 2000 called, “I Stand Corrected.” Reading this book is a journey down the rabbit hole of Lane's colorful mind. But his true, raw, naked musings are much better appreciated when his shadow-self crawls into a microphone while he delivers his poetry as performance. This he does frequently in various venues. “#Much Better #Thanks for Asking” is a book of poetry best read aloud, even when alone. The verse lends itself to the sounds of words as well as to their meanings. Don’t expect correct punctuation, proper sentences or standard structure. There are those who might call these works “slam poetry.” There are those who might call these poems a psychic, psychedelic or even psychotic. This author is a rebel, not in the political or social sense, but more like post-tweaking stream-of-consciousness, and sometimes with astonishing depth. There are delightful twists, dark passages and moments of stunning intellectual whimsy.
